Why am I being required to provide information related to the owner of wallets that send crypto to my Gemini wallet?
In compliance to UK Travel Rule regulations, virtual asset service providers (VASPs), like Gemini, are required to share information about the sender and the receiver on both ends of all crypto transactions. The specific information required may differ based on the risk profile of the transaction.
What information must I provide?
Users must provide the full legal name and the Country of residence of the owner of any wallet that sends crypto to the user’s Gemini wallet. This data will only be shared between the sending providers, and with no one else.
Can I receive crypto transfers from any initiating wallet?
Yes, however Gemini may freeze and/or restrict users who are attempting to make inbound transfers to Gemini from a non-TRUST VASP. This is due to these transactions potentially missing the required information to ensure transparency of the transaction.
Can I receive crypto transfers from any blockchain network?
No. When making a crypto deposit to Gemini, users must always ensure they are sending the crypto over the specified network at this page. Sending tokens to the exchange over an unsupported network will result in a loss of funds.
Additionally, only transfers of ERC-20 tokens, ETH, and BTC are supported customers depositing from another VASP. Deposits of cryptocurrencies from other specified network are supported when coming from a self-hosted wallet.
How will I know if I have a pending Deposit Attestation?
You can view your pending deposit attestations on the Deposit Page. You will also receive a notification to provide this information upon login for each incoming crypto transfer for which you have not yet provided the required information.
What happens when I do not provide a Deposit Attestation?
A user will not be able to perform withdrawals or trades until the user provides the required information.
How do I complete a Deposit Attestation?
To attest for a crypto deposit, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to the Deposit Page.
- Under “Select currency” choose the crypto that was received.
- Select "Continue"
- Scroll down to the “Transfer History" section. Pending attestations will have a “Confirm Deposit” button.
- Click 'Confirm Deposit,' which will prompt you to complete the Deposit Attestation, where you can indicate if the transfer is from yourself, from a third party, or that you do not recognise the transfer.
What happens if I don't recognise the transfer?
If a user selects “Do Not Recognise,” the user will not be able to perform withdrawals on the account until the investigation into the transfer is complete.
What happens if I don't provide accurate information in the Deposit Attestation?
Gemini is required to collect and screen the information provided by the user. If a user knowingly provides false information as part of the Deposit Attestation, that is a violation of the User Agreement and adverse action may be taken on their account.
