What is ATOM and the Cosmos Network?
The ATOM is the Cosmos Hub’s primary token and secures the Hub’s valuable interchain services.
Cosmos is a rapidly expanding ecosystem of independent interconnected blockchains built using developer-friendly application components and connected with ground-breaking IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) protocol.

ATOM addresses use Memos to identify transaction recipients
Memos are used by shared (custodial) wallets to identify and credit individual accounts.
They are often a numeric string, e.g. 123456789.
If you use Approved Addresses you will be able to include the Memo field when adding ATOM addresses. The Memo string is tied to a specific address.
Receiving ATOM into Gemini (Depositing)
Receiving ATOM via the Cosmos Network into Gemini requires both the ATOM Address and ATOM Memo fields to be filled out to identify the proper individual account as Gemini uses a shared address.
When viewing the Receive ATOM screen you will see both the ATOM Address and ATOM Memo strings. Copy and Paste both values and include them in your transfer to Gemini.
Failure to do so may result in loss of funds.
Sending ATOM from Gemini (Withdrawing)
Sending to a shared wallet
A shared (custodial) wallet can be associated with multiple accounts. Memos are used to identify incoming deposits and credit ATOM to the proper individual account. Please ensure you enter the memo exactly as instructed.
Failure to do so may result in loss of funds.
Sending to a private wallet
Sending to a private non-custodial wallet (e.g. Cosmostation) does not require a memo. It is optional.
Note for UK customers:
As of 17th November 2023, only transfers of ERC-20 tokens, ETH, and BTC are supported on Gemini. Whilst you can still freely trade and hold these unsupported tokens within Gemini, we will be removing the unsupported tokens from deposit and withdrawal options, with the exception of transfers to and from a self-hosted wallet.
