Why are SMS and Authy no longer supported for 2FA on Gemini?
These methods are being replaced with stronger, more phishing-resistant options such as passkeys, hardware keys or authenticator apps. We are removing SMS and Authy as supported 2FA options to help boost security and keep your account as secure as possible. These legacy 2FA methods rely on external networks and third parties that are more vulnerable to phishing attacks and SIM-swap attacks.
What do I need to do before Dec 3, 2025?
You must update your 2FA method before December 3, 2025 and ensure uninterrupted access to your Gemini account using the new 2FA methods. You will not be able to access the app immediately if you do not do this by Dec 3, 2025 until you go through account recovery or contact Gemini support.
What happens if I don't update my 2FA?
If you continue to use SMS or Authy past Dec 3, 2025 you will not be able to sign in successfully.
Why are passkeys recommended?
Passkeys are the next evolution of securely signing in to your Gemini account. This prevents the need for passwords and one time codes by using strong device based cryptography to prevent phishing attacks. Passkeys work seamlessly across devices that support Face or Touch ID or similar features.
