Getting Started & Onboarding
What is U.S. stock trading on Gemini?
Gemini now offers the ability to buy and sell exchange-listed stocks and ETFs directly from your Gemini account. Stock trading is facilitated by Gemini Galactic Markets (GGM), our registered broker-dealer, which acts as the introducing broker under its FINRA registration. Trade execution, clearing, and custody are handled by Apex Clearing Corporation. Nasdaq is the official provider of real-time displayed market data.
How do I start trading stocks?
Getting set up takes three steps:
- Navigate to the Stocks section. On mobile, go to the Invest tab, then tap "Stocks." On the web, navigate to the Stocks page.
- Complete a brief questionnaire covering your background, employment, and financial profile.
- Once approved, you can begin trading stocks.
Why do I need to answer additional questions to trade stocks?
Applicable laws and regulations require platforms offering stock trading to collect this information before enabling access. This is collected on behalf of GGM, and is standard across the industry.
Can I trade stocks on ActiveTrader mode?
No. Stock trading is currently only available on the Gemini mode trading interface. If you are using ActiveTrader, you will not see Stocks. To switch:
- Web: Click the "Gemini" toggle at the top of your page.
- Mobile: Tap your profile icon and toggle "ActiveTrader mode" to off.
What stocks can I trade on Gemini?
You can trade exchange-listed stocks and ETFs, including securities listed on NYSE, Nasdaq, and regional exchanges.
How are stocks different from crypto on Gemini?
Stocks and ETFs are traditional securities, traded during U.S. market hours and regulated by the SEC, FINRA, and state agencies. Crypto trades 24/7 on Gemini's own exchange. Both live on the same Gemini platform, so you can move between them without switching apps.
Eligibility & Availability
Where is stock trading available?
Gemini Stocks is currently live for U.S. residents except those in Alabama, Arkansas, Guam, Illinois, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Washington, D.C. We plan to roll out in these states in the weeks ahead.
Is Gemini Stocks available outside the U.S.?
No. Gemini Stocks is only available to eligible U.S. residents in states where the service has launched.
Trading, Order Types & Market Hours
What are the trading hours for stocks?
Stock trading is available during regular market hours: Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM ET, excluding U.S. market holidays. If you attempt to place a market order while the market is closed, you will see a message indicating the next available trading window.
What order types are supported?
At launch, only market orders are supported. Limit orders are planned for a future release; once available, they will also allow you to place orders outside of market hours.
Can I buy fractional shares?
Yes. You can buy fractional shares of eligible U.S. stocks on Gemini. The minimum trade size is approximately $1. Please note that sell orders must also be at least $1 in value.
Can I set up a recurring buy?
Not at launch. Recurring buys are on our roadmap and we will share more when the feature is available.
What US stocks and ETFs can I trade?
You can trade over 4,000 U.S.-listed common stocks and ETFs on Gemini, and the available list continues to expand over time.
Fee & Charges
Does Gemini charge fees for stock trading?
Gemini does not charge any commission fees for buying or selling U.S. stocks or ETFs. However, when selling, regulatory fees required by the SEC and FINRA are passed through to you:
- SEC Fee: 0.00206% of the total sale amount (minimum $0.01).
- TAF Fee: $0.000195 per share sold (minimum $0.01, capped at $9.79 per trade).
These fees apply to sell orders only and are automatically deducted at the time of execution. An estimate is shown on the order confirmation screen before you confirm.
Funding & Payments
What payment methods can I use to buy stocks?
You can buy stocks using your existing USD balance. You can add funds by ACH transfer or wire transfer.
- Note that funds deposited via ACH or wire are only available for trading once they appear in your Available to Trade balance. If you deposit via ACH, you may need to allow 4 to 5 business days for the transfer to settle before the funds appear in your Available to Trade balance.
Credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are not supported for stock purchases.
Settlement, Dividends & Withdrawals
What is the settlement cutoff time?
Sell orders placed before 4:00 PM ET will settle the next business day.
Sell orders placed after 4:00 PM ET settle two business days later.
What is a Good Faith Violation and how do I avoid one?
Because stock sale proceeds take one business day to settle, a Good Faith Violation can occur if you use proceeds from a stock sale to buy another stock before those proceeds have settled, and then sell the newly purchased stock before the original sale has settled.
To avoid violations, wait for your sale proceeds to settle before using them to buy and then sell another security. Violations may result in restrictions on your account.
When can I withdraw funds after selling stocks?
When you sell, your stocks decrease and your cash balance increases immediately to reflect the proceeds. However, because U.S. equities settle on a Trade Date plus 1 business day basis, those funds are considered an advance until the trade officially settles the following business day. Your available withdrawable balance will update the following business day. Settlement is processed at the end of each day, at 5:30 PM ET.
If you originally funded the purchase with an ACH deposit, your proceeds become available to withdraw once both the stock sale and the ACH deposit have fully cleared.
How do dividends work for stocks on Gemini?
Gemini supports USD cash dividends for U.S. stocks. If you hold a stock that pays a cash dividend and you are a shareholder on the record date, you are entitled to receive that dividend. The dividend amount will be credited to your account on the ex-dividend date with a temporary hold until the cash is received from our clearing partner. Once settled, the hold is removed and the funds become fully available.
Does Gemini support dividend reinvestment (DRIP)?
Dividend reinvestment is not currently supported. Cash dividends are credited to your USD balance.
Transferring Stocks
Can I transfer my stocks to or from another brokerage?
Gemini does not currently support transferring stock positions to or from another brokerage. In the meantime:
• To move holdings in: sell the shares at your current brokerage, transfer the USD to Gemini by ACH or wire, then buy the stocks on Gemini.
• To move holdings out: sell the shares on Gemini, wait for settlement (T+1), then withdraw the USD proceeds to your linked bank account.
Stock Lending Program
What is the Stock Lending Program?
The Fully Paid Securities Lending Program allows your fully owned shares to be temporarily lent to other investors through Apex Clearing Corporation. You retain full ownership and can sell your shares at any time. In exchange, you earn a portion of the revenue generated from lending, currently 10% of gross lending revenue, paid monthly. Enrollment is optional and can be enabled or disabled at any time through your account settings.
- Voting rights: You will not be able to vote on shareholder matters if the record date falls during an active loan.
- Dividend tax treatment: Dividends received on lent shares are paid as substitute payments, which are typically taxed as ordinary income rather than at the qualified dividend rate.
- SIPC coverage: Lent shares are not covered by SIPC. Instead, collateral equal to at least 100% of the market value of your lent shares is held on your behalf at a custodial bank.
- Earnings may vary: Revenue depends on market demand for your specific shares and may be zero in some months.
Account Protection & Other Questions
Where can I view my stock holdings?
On web, your stock holdings are displayed on your Home dashboard alongside your other balances. You can also navigate to Trade > Stocks and select a specific stock to view your position.
On mobile, check the Home tab for an overview, or tap into Invest > Stocks for individual positions.
Will stock transactions appear in my transaction history?
Yes. Stock transactions will appear in your transaction history alongside crypto and predictions activity, displayed by the stock's ticker symbol (e.g., AAPL, NVDA).
Who holds my shares, and are they protected?
Your shares are held in custody by Apex Clearing Corporation on your behalf, and Apex is the clearing firm that carries your brokerage account. Stocks and ETFs held through Gemini are protected by SIPC insurance up to $500,000 (including a $250,000 limit for cash) through our clearing broker. SIPC protects against the failure of a brokerage firm — it does not protect against market losses or declines in the value of your investments. For more information, please see our Lending Agreement.
Can I trade stocks on margin?
No. Stock trading uses your settled, available cash balance only. You cannot currently trade stocks on margin, and stock positions are not held in a margin account.
