Gemini retrieves accrued reward amounts once per day from the relevant network and updates customers' balances accordingly. Customers are free to transfer their rewards from their staking account to their exchange account at any time.
Different networks have different reward distributions. While staking rewards usually accrue at regular intervals, withdrawing rewards varies depending on the blockchain network. For instance, in the case of ETH staking, partial withdrawals above 32 ETH do not require any prompt from the validator itself. The protocol will automatically withdraw any amount exceeding 32 ETH, as any excess amount does not earn the validator additional rewards. The receipt of these rewards by Gemini could take five days or more, depending on the length of the on-chain withdrawal queue. In contrast, rewards for MATIC staking accrue at every block but could take six days or more to appear in customers' accounts after withdrawals.
It is important to note that the time it takes to accrue rewards on Ethereum is subject to the network's activation queue, which could affect when customers will start accruing rewards. The activation queue is a first-come-first-serve queue for stakers who wish to begin staking their ETH. When a customer initiates a staking transaction, their ETH is added to the activation queue, and it will remain there until it is activated. Historically, this process has taken anywhere from a few hours to a few weeks to complete.
